Opel were producing some pretty looking cars around this time and, for once, when fettled by Wayne Cherry’s team, the Vauxhall versions looked even better. The Manta took the droop snoot fitted to the Ascona to turn it into a Cavalier and returned it to Russelheim. Which reminds me that I haven’t seen a Calibra for years. A vehicle of style over good sense with horribly weedy, yet elegantly shallow, headlamps. Have they all been crashed in the dark?
The poor old Calibra. Indeed that was slick, apart from the lamps and some details of the front bumper. I’d love to know who it is in Opel who decrees all their cars have slightly banal dynamics. This has cost them billions by now. They have nothing to lose by dialling in crisp steering and a good ride/handling balance. Even if they had these settings as no cost options along with standard stodgy set ups they’d still win business.
