A photo for Sunday: 2003 Volvo Versatility Concept

This gives a hint of what an S80 estate might have looked like. The rear lamps are especially pleasing.

I like anchovies. I dislike post-war town planning.

  1. A great looking thing, this! I can’t recall seeing it before … maybe I just never saw a photo from this angle, but I’d be surprised as I am a fan of that kind of lamp treatment … Thanks for posting!

  2. Yes, that lamp also reminded me of something I like very much…
It’s really a good example of a car class we very much miss today, a large, sleek, no-nonsense estate with seemingly good packaging. It even has a long wheelbase, which hasn’t always been Volvo’s strong point.

  3. It’s hard to believe there was insufficient demand for a S80 estate (or V80?). Even the name is suggestive. The rear lamps are pleasing. It would have had little direct competition too.

  4. Just seen images of forthcoming V90 (actually, it’s a scale model of it) and it can’t hold a candle to this earlier concept, although it’s nice enough. Volvo under Chinese ownership is looking promising, just add 5 and 6 cylinder engines, although seemingly that’s a false hope.
